I'm looking at a 1995 Freightliner Classic. 475hp Cat 3406 (As per the metal tag in the valve cover.) w/ an 18 speed trans.
How can I find out what model 3406 it is?
What are the differences between each model 3406?
Also, what's the displacment of the CAT 3406?
Thanks!

That would be an E model... the first with electronic controls.
The A's and B's had Bosch pumps and smaller crank main journals among other differences. The C model was a mechanical/electronic hybrid....
Give the serial number to a CAT store and they can tell you about all the work that any CAT dealer has performed on that engine since it was new.W900ChuckTerri Thanks this. -
It is a 3406E model engine. They never made a mechanical 475HP engine. Displacement is 855 CU IN. same as the old mechanical's, only it is now electronic. The serial number will start with 5EK.

NEVS, RGR you are correct, I spent ten years building CATS and for some reason the 855 popped out.

True, Probably because I spent 8 years tearing down Cummins and then did the CAT thing and have never turned back

As stated earlier. The engine has to have a serial number prefix of 5EK and be a 3406E 14.6L. This is the first of the electronic CATs. It is also very easy to hop this engine up with a good file in the ECM. It had to have been sold as a 1750 peak torque 475 with the 18 speed transmission installed behind it. Eaton only provided the 18 speed with the torque to handle 1750 or higher torque ratings back in 95, the transmission should be a RTLO18718B

Here's some pics of the truck.
