Ld Lt Tare, is empty weight of car. Ld Lt Gross is presented in pounds and also in kilograms.

Those rail cars generally gross out to 100 ton each. Generally 20,000 to 30,000 HP is applied to a priority 10,000 ton train.

Sorry, I have a thing for trains. They've always fascinated me. Grew up two blocks from where two mainlines crossed.

That is with the trucks. Each axle weighs a ton.

Oh you're right of course. I didn't pay attention to the original picture to notice that the trucks were removed. I've hauled side frames and wheels but never had a load of axles.

Mike2633, D.Tibbitt and FerrissWheel Thank this.

UP had ads out in Omaha a couple years ago looking for train crew help at like 18.00 bucks an hour ...laughable .
Last I knew they were laying people off and had about a 100 locomotives parked in Missouri valley Iowa with weeds growing up around them .
When I lived in council bluffs years ago and ran regional I had 2 neighbors that worked for UP and I was home more than they were .
That whole precision railroading thing has trimmed things down and it's not quite as desirable as it once was .
Half the retirees in council bluffs are ex UP employees.
My neighbors barely got home and were out the door again.
