Inform the food shipper of poison loaded on the trailer prior to loading? Or not?

    Which would you do?

9,990 times out of 10,000 its going to be fine. Nine of those other times it will cause you headaches and meetings (which cause more headaches). But that 1 time? Oh, that's going to be a HUGE problem.

Thursday a driver got yelled at by the ops manager for a complaint having been lodged by a place he went to for a pickup who ships food. Apparently it was assumed that the driver told the shipper he had poison on board who then presumably questioned why in the hell they’d send that truck.

The story the driver told me was they were able to deduce that on their own.

I certainly would have told them. It would be at the very least highly unethical not to and I’m not playing that game.

Assuming it's the customer who is loading their stuff into the trailer - a skid of poison isn't that hard to identify if anyone cares to look.

And the Ops manager who yelled at the driver needs a visit to the woodshed, then church, then back to the woodshed. Any contamination investigation will uncover the paper trail of poison being on the trailer pretty quickly and the carrier will become the scapegoat.

I've seen that twice in my career doing LTL where poison was on the same trailer as food. The one time that trailer was assigned to me and I brought it up, I was told I should just keep that info under my hat.

In all fairness, they did eventually offer to take the pallet off and put it on another trailer, the downside was I was already pulling doubles and the split would have meant I would have to pull triples into my drop lot before running my route.

I ended up leaving it cause they were forecasting snow that day.

Management should think of this way....
Drivers gripe because drivers' care. If they didn’t, they’d be quiet — and quiet is when they should worry.
Instead, they are too Worried about their individual metrics (bonuses).

At XPO they tried sending me to a pasta plant with poison. My friend who runs the shipping office said gtfo here with that s###. She called my supervisor and told her to never send a placarded truck there again.

I just laughed at the whole thing. I told the supervisor they won’t load it, because of the poison. Idiots. Truck drivers….. what do we know?
