What's the logic behind cutting driver's rates as opposed to a lay-off? In "normal" corporate America, a lay-off is the tried and true method of responding to a shrinking market. The trucking sector is anything but normal.

I prefer a smaller paycheck, temporarily, than no paycheck at all.

Rate per mile is down. Can always find a load, just not at the revenue desired. Layoffs require reduction of assets.
They are expecting rates to bounce back at some point.

    ExOTR Thanks this.

Just to be clear, I'm not speaking to general freight rates. Companies are cutting their mileage pay to drivers. Why not lay off drivers? It seems that it would make more sense from a business operations point of view.

Because this way, when rates move up, they have more drivers to move freight.
