The economy is having a very adverse effect on the trucking industry . Many fleets are downsizing and have a hiring freeze . Driver turnover is the lowest it's been since 1998 . There are thousands on experienced drivers out of work competing for jobs . The carriers sending recruiters to schools now are carriers that have drivers constantly quitting due to poor pay and working conditions . Many of those quitting leave the industry because there are no openings for drivers with less than 2 years experience with decent companies . The schools aren't going to quit taking your money just because there are no good jobs available . Think it out very seriously before spending money to get a CDL .

Rick, I cannot believe that companies are even hiring right now. These truck stops have been full at 10 am with guys waiting on freight for DAYS. I was in Tampa the other day at the TA there off of I-4. It looked like a gypsy convention! I was expecting to see a tent city in the back lot. Now I know that Florida is always bad, but these guys looked like they were living there. Georgia ain't that far up the road.

I have seen this all the way down the I-75 corridor, Detroit to Tampa. Full truck stops and no freight. And I would say that 98% of the flats I saw were empty, either sitting or dead heading somewhere.

And from what I am seeing, this economy will continue to tank. Especially with all of the new taxes coming on line. Even the messiah announced that it will take years to recover, some messiah eh? Still waiting for that sea level change and whatever else he promised, he he he...

Not a good time to be a newbie out here.

My cousin just went to trucking school has a perfect driving and job history and it took him a month to find a job! Even swift had a hiring freeze for their school and new drivers. I think werner was one of the only companies that didn't.

It seems to me its kind of like the airlines... they overbook the flights because they know that some people won't end up being there for whatever reason. And sometimes they get caught with more passengers with tickets then seats on the plane!
