I was looking into buying a tandem flat, in canada currently doing tri, looking into going into the western states. Was wondering what the difference is and what would be better

Depend on trailer length. Down here in gods country I’d want to slide rear axel if it was a 53foot trailer

For a Canadian the front slider on a 48 is best if you plan on running international freight.
Sliding the front will move about 1500lbs or so from drives to trailer axles. So you can load 35500 to 36500 on the drives in Canada and 37500 on the trailer(closed) and slide at the border and be US legal if you bump some up onto the steering (with the right tires) and you are licensed and permitted for it in each state.
ND you need a $5.00 self issued permit for interstate only.
SD $40.00 annual permit for interstate.
    NE no interstate over 80k.
MT license gross up to 89k fort axle.
ID WA OR need license and annual permits.
UT is a ridiculous price for over 80k.
    I don't remember WY info.
All permit rates are at least 4 years old.
I ran a front slide 48 off and on for 6 years.
By the way if you are in the west Doepker trailers are 800lbs lighter and stronger than Loadkings.
