Greetings good people. So it has been years since I worked for reefer companies, so I need to refresh my brain cells.

I just picked up some frozen bread in Chitown that's going up to the PNW. (I need to make my way home SOMEHOW.) So the broker and the BOL say to set the reefer at -10. Is this 10 below ZERO or 10 below freezing (22 degrees)? The shipper said to set it at 0. When I asked him about the -10 he seemed fidgety and unsure. Anyway, I set it at 10 below ZERO. Is this correct?

Which begs the next question: How long will it take to get to that temp? Right now it's at 15.4 degrees. I set it about an hour ago. This is a TK Precedent C-600. How cold do they get? Because I'm starting to get really uneasy. I don't need a load rejection. (Who does?) The reefer seems pretty new.

I have used that reefer unit before and it should display -10 as a temperature that you set it to and that would be the correct temperature setting, no complexity to it because the most that would happen is someone will come outside and validate that temperature setting and they'll go by what I referred to. It might take a little while to get to that setting after loading but the product inside will not be jeopardized in the meantime.

Also I would go by what the BOL says not some random person, as the receiver would validate the BOL not hearsay.

I just manually scrolled it down to -10.

-10°F below zero is what I would say. I don't know your reefer (btu). But maybe don't show up early for delivery to give you more time to cool.

Yeah, I was 90 minutes early. I should have put more thought into it. The reefer got down to about 14 degrees, then it went into defrost mode and the temp started climbing again. Is this normal? Why would it go into defrost without even reaching its target temp?

Just to be clear Chris, -10 would be below ZERO, not below freezing? -10 below freezing would be 22. If this is what they wanted, the BOL would say 22, correct?

    Blagoje Thanks this.

-10 equals 10 below zero. If you are in the US use Fahrenheit, not celcius unless the BOL/RateCon says otherwise. NOBODY references freezing in any BOL I've seen. The RateCon or the BOL will state the temp. All you can do is follow what is written. Don't ask 50 people you will get 52 opinions. It's on the RateCon or BOL or it doesn't count. Nobody you are asking is going to pay for the rejected load or spend times getting rid of the rejected freight. You will.

My reefer trailers could be at temp in an hour or less, even in 100 F weather. Leave the doors closed until the last moment when you arrive at the customer.

If the reefer freezes up the temp won't go any lower. Defrost is necessary to keep the reefer components from freezing and not being able to reach very low temps.
