Isn't it just a opacity test?
Diesel inspections emission testingCam Roberts Thanks this. -
There is no plug in emission test or opacity test in NY for 9800# weight class and above.
This of course is the rules for any where outside of the metropolitan area of New York State. -
Diesels 1997 or newer and under 8500 gvwr get a obd2 test anywhere in new york.
All diesels over 8500 gvwr that reside in the DEMA area require an emissions.
Diesels outside do not.
I don't know when this article was published. But here's one link.
About diesel emissions inspections
I see new york can do a roadside emissions test.
Wonder what other states do that.Last edited: Sep 30, 2018

Ny does have road side opacity tests but they are very rare at best.
You also could have a deleted truck and pass the opacity test easily.
Of course you would have to have all emission equipment in place even if they weren’t active. -
Just remember dealers won't do engine work on deleted trucks or take them on trade .

I've been through ONE roadside emissions check in 30+ years of trucking.. and that was in Jersey.
