Hello All,
I am an Illinois resident who is changing careers and I would like to drive a truck.
I have my permit and have been learning on to operate a big-rig (Straight-10 and Super-10). However, I may not have a truck available to me when I take the exam next month.
Does anyone know of a place where I can rent a truck for the day, to take the exam?
Thank you, in advance, for you responses.

Try checking with the colleges around you (tech or voc colleges) and see if they have a program in which you can use their truck to take the test. It will be cheaper then taking the course prolly 200-500 bucks. If not check with a CDL training school to see if they have a program similar to the above mentioned. Good luck, and remember GOAL (Get Out And Look) =D

Ryder will rent you a truck

I called Ryder and Penske. Both of them said that they would only rent to 'companies'. Even an O/O would have to have his or her 'company' rent the truck for them.
It sounded like more bureaucracy to me. But I'm new to the industry.
Is that really how it's done? -
Yep, it is. But look at it from their viewpoint; it's an insurance/liability issue. If you, as a non-CDL holder took that rig out and had a wreck, or God forbid killed someone, they'd be sued for millions. Not worth it for them.
The driving school angle is probably your best bet. They already have the liability insurance on their vehicles and are set up for it.
When I moved from Canada to Louisiana I had to do the same thing. Cost me $250, took about an hour and scared the whoohah outa some other "testees" who were watching the yard test. Heard alot of "I can't do THAT" (maneuvering, alley dock, etc) from them. My "Road Test" consisted of sitting in the office and swapping trucking storys with the "tester" whilst he filled out my paperwork. Said he wasn't gonna insult me by testing any further.... still kept the $250 tho.Walter T Thanks this. -
As a permit holder, aren't you required to have someone with an actual CDL in the truck with you while driving it? How would you get it to the DMV?
-
The DDS here in GA will let you use rental trucks, but here's the rub: You have to be listed as an authorized driver on the paperwork, and Penske/Ryder et al will not add you as an authorized driver unless you already have the actual CDL license. Once in a blue moon you might find a driving school/3rd party tester who'll let you test there and use their truck (for a fee), but they are extremely rare. They want your tuition money, you see. I lucked up and stumbled upon an old friend who is having one of his drivers take me to the facility in a company truck to take the test. I had darn near given up on finding truck when this situation fell into my lap.
