There’s an app called Roadtrippers that is great for finding those off the wall and interesting stops. You put in your route and it will show you the attractions within a set distance off your route. You can also use their website instead of the app.

You could rent a cabin with a kitchen on the Wolf River in Fremont Wi and fish the river on a nice rental pontoon boat and then take the kids to Wisconsin Dells , plenty of fun things to do in Wisconsin.

What kind of a budget are we dealing with here. I personally would avoid the run down motels. That can be stressful. Stick with newer ones with a swimming pool. I guess it’s true that Truck drivers for for a drive on their days off. Mail man goes for a walk.

I think you need more time. At least 2 weeks, because of travel time. One weeks tough, unless you have a final destination within 10 hrs. Max. What’s the diesel powered vehicle? Bobtailing? Dodge Dually?

If I were you. I head to:

Jacob’s Well west of Austin Tx. Swim there for a bit, mess around in that area for the day.

Head out SW to Big Bend Tx. If you’re family is into that type of environment it’s worth a camp.

Then from there just play random

The Norman and Vi Petty Museum in Clovis, New Mexico, where Buddy Holly and the Crickets recorded most of their records.

Norman & Vi Petty Rock 'N' Roll Museum

    Also in New Mexico:

Tucumcari, where there are a bunch of very cool 50s-era motels on the old US 66.

Santa Fe, I really like wandering around the arts and restaurant district around the Plaza. There are dozens of amazing restaurants for dinner (some very pricy, some less so). A favorite place for lunch is the Plaza Cafe right there on the Plaza. I went there several times as a bus driver, and we stayed at the La Quinta on Cerrillos Road. Nothing special, but right next door is a little family-owned restaurant called the Flying Tortilla that is just about my favorite place to eat breakfast in New Mexico.

Gallup, also on old US 66 is the El Rancho Hotel. This one is from the 1940s, and was where stars like John Wayne stayed when they made Westerns like “She Wore A Yellow Ribbon”. The rooms are all named after movie stars (I think I had the Alan Ladd room last time). Actually quite nice, with a beautiful lobby and a very decent restaurant.

A Field Of Dreams. The baseball field from the 1989 movie, if you build it they will come.
