Heavy Hammer, this has been one of the most enjoyable and entertaining threads I have read on this forum. You have a true gift sir! LMAO with the "inside voices", (and I have this "condition" also...I think I'm the funniest guy in the world because of it too.)
I got a lot out of this journey you related to us; thought I wanted Heavy Haul, ran flatbed for @ 2 years, got into a tanker recently, locally... not so much desire any longer... maybe some day, don't know, I'm 53 already. When the next door closes, who knows, maybe...
Thanks for a great read, stay safe driver!
Rookies, Wannabees, & superheroes. This is a true run about Heavy Haul.

HH must say this is truly one of the best things I've read in awhile. Currently doing flatbed and have an opportunity to change companies and start heavy haul on a double drop rgn hauling mostly tractors and construction equipment, along with oversized flatbed loads. After reading you story I will I wouldn't mind doing it just because of the challenge. But debating if I should wait because I'm still a newbie with 10 months under my belt.

If you have a company willing to give you an opportunity, I say take it, they don't fall in your lap all the time.
But look before you leap. Do your research on that company first. You don't want to be a job hopper. What if they don't maintain their equipment, it doesn't take long to run up 100 CSA points pulling an rgn or any trailer of a company doesn't maintain their equipment.
I started moving equipment with no experience. I got real lucky, I found a small 8 truck company and this 76 year old timer said he would go to bat for me and train me.
Make sure you will get the support you need if you make the leap. From my experience, other drivers are willing to help new people. We are training a new guy at our company right now.MJ1657 and T. Hooghouse Thank this. -
Well that's what brought me back over to truckers report to do some digging, company I'm looking at is RE West out of Ashland TN. However can't really find to much about their heavy haul division only things about the vans (only have 130 trucks in total)

This is one of the most awesome and educational threads on TTR. Wonder if HH finally found a way to get rid of Pinhead?
TripleSix Thanks this. -

I can make peace with closing it down, there were three before it. But I can't understand why it has to be moved to the unmoderated section, 1 2 and 3 are still here just locked.4mer trucker, Razororange, Opendeck and 3 others Thank this.

This was such an awesome read. I have been looking at going back to flatbed with the intention of getting into OD/heavy haul/specialized and this just makes me wanna do it even more.

This was my all time favorite thread on TTR. The thing that boggles my mind to this day is the guy asking Hammer about his idle time in Yellowknife in the winter. Yessir, if I were in the Territories in the winter, I would definitely try to keep my idle time to a minimum.
For you guys that enjoyed reading this thread, here's another with the guys telling how they first started.
