I had a guy running from Linden to Rennsselaer every week. He took I-78W to Rt 24 North and landed on I-287 in Morristown and took I-287 N to the thruway.

We used to have Canadian drivers coming down for years using Rt 17. The minute they opened the completed northern section of I-287 they all stopped using Rt. 17 saying that it was 40 miles longer coming to Woodbridge [Turnpike Exit 10] than Rt 17 to Rt 80 & down the Turnpike and worth it.

They were paid 405 miles from Montreal to Keasbey and said the reduced traffic, lack of lights & rush hour traffic was worth doing the extra miles.

I-78 to Rt 24 to I-287 was 20 miles longer because I-287 runs out west to Bridgewater b/r turning back NE to run up toward Mahwah. Depending on yuour destination in newark this route has no tolls in Jersey...

Well, the pick was right on US1/9, but in Jersey City.

I just drove it this morning. 287 to 17 to 3 to US1/9 south.

Traffic backed up a bit around the NJ4 exit, and then there were about 5 lights along NJ17 between I-80 and NJ3. There is one bridge that startles you, labeled 13'6, but the left and right lanes are 13'2. You fit, but I threw on the hazards and crept under to be safe. Definitely never going that way when it snows. It's a snug fit. I've been on NJ3 and US1/9 before, and the new ramps they've done around the Broadway are great. Makes things easier dealing with the traffic around the Pulaski Skyway.

I would probably go that way again. Lots of 53x102s on that route, both north and south of I-80. And of course US1/9 and Truck 1/9 are clustered up with traffic. But, that doesn't really ever change.
