I'm pulled of 70 westbound. Ruidoso is being evacuated due to a large fire. I'm trying to get to elpaso. I'm waiting til morning but it looks bad.ill go back to roswell and take 285 south to Artesia. 82 goes to alamogordo. Is that passable by truck? There's also 180 out of Carlsbad but I've got 6 hrs on my 70 and want to keep it short. Anyone know 82?

82 is passable with a truck. It’s not as nice as 70 but it works assuming you’re not oversize. There’s a tunnel west of Cloudcroft that overheight doesn’t fit through.

Could you take 380 west to 54 south? I think that’s a better route than 82

82 has a 65' restriction IIRC. Google maps the intersection in Alamagordo looking east. There's a sign there I think.

FYI, I'm 76' and made it just fine. Good runnin

BTW, The length restriction doesn't show up in the atlas

I would never take a truck off that hill on Highway 82 from Cloudcroft to Alamogordo! The hill is a 4,315 elevation drop over the course of sixteen miles! Pick another route even if it takes you longer. I personally would take 285 down to Carlsbad and then hit 62/180 on into El Paso. Make sure you have everything you need before leaving Carlsbad because there ain't much else until you get to El Paso. Be advised of the high winds that occur from time to time on Guadalupe Pass, a fair amount of trucks have gotten blown over there.

That's my plan now. As of 6 am mdt hwy 70 is still closed even though the sky looks clear from here (MM 319).

The fire map has that looking questionable. So I'm going through carlbad.

You can’t move up to 380 through Lincoln and Capitan and hit 54 south out of Carrizozo? I’ve been on 54 all the way down through there and 380 is a cool drive as well.
