S60 DETROIT OVERHEAD

    After how many miles should the overhead adjustments be done for the first time since an inframe? The Detroit shop never said, and I didn't ask. The valve buttons were changed, so I thought that might factor in. It's been 8 years since I've had a S60 engine rebuilt. I think the mileage was 60-75k for the first overhead.

    I’ve always heard between 70 and 100 on first one. If it’s done right, still performs well and gets good fuel economy, leave it be. I’ve yet to do mine. Now at 160k. It’s running strong. Going to have to just do it myself. I hear the main issue is exhaust valves, once they get pounded into the seat. I think the best way is to wait till the rings seal up. Usually 79-80k. Once it stops burning oil, and fuel economy jumps up. I only had one ran on mine last time it was inframed. Roughly at 100k. Ran it 1.4 million before the next inframe, never ran it again. Still has all the original buttons. Whatever you do, don’t wait till 160k. Lol

    I like doing them at 50k after overhaul, then every 100-150k.

    I am approaching 60k. I planned on doing it then. But I'm not getting home so I'm going a little beyond that. I am guessing it's not critical at all to do 1rst adjustments by 60k. Maybe I'll post how far out of adjustment after it's done.

    Let us know. In my experience, intake valves will be pretty tight, exhaust not too bad. Was the head replaced? At one time, intake valves on new heads were supposed to be set at .010 for the initial install.

    That info, along with any fuel economy changes would be interesting. Along with any changes between now a 100k. Mine didn’t seal up till 100k. Fuel economy is attainable with light loads. Still a disappointment though. Never has been good since brand new.

    I am not doing the overhead myself. I did that once 12 years ago, and 40k miles later something went wrong and had to get an inframe-don't know if I made an mistake or what. I've had the same mechanic who's very experienced with rebuilds (30 years now) do it, and I will ask him to write some adjustment #s for me. My current rebuild has gone perfect so far. I used Shell rotella conventional oil (T4 I think) until the rings seated, which only took 30k miles. I switched to Shaeffer's 15/40 semisynthetic (my choice of oil I've used for 13 years). I burned 1/2 gal in first 15k, changed the filters, and looks like it's only down 1 quart in 13k miles since-and that's with 28k on the oil now. Interstate Power Systems (a Detroit shop) did the inframe, which included a head, injectors, turbo, bull gear, oil pump, & water pump. An old hand named John did the work. He was very experienced.

    I bought my truck with right at 1 million miles, ran it to 1.4 locally in south florida and never did a over head...Never had a problem.
