I've been looking on this FMCSA website for safety data for several companies.
My question is, If they have a good safety score does that make them a good company to work for? Likewise, if a company has unsafe drivers does that necessarily mean they are a bad company to work for?
    http://ai.fmcsa.dot.gov/SMS/Data/carrier.aspx?enc=mysJZo2Tta4=
(Crete Carriers - with a 24% for unsafe driving.)
Here is one with a flag on safety for comparison sake.
    http://ai.fmcsa.dot.gov/SMS/Data/carrier.aspx?enc=FXBtl5Jj4+g=
(CR England with an 84.5 % for unsafe driving.)
I'm trying to be objective and use the stats ~ but I don't know how much value to place on this info.

You can't always go by the scores . A company can have a strict policy on HOS but have drivers that ignore the policy and get them nailed in an audit .
A company with a high safety score can have low pay or be very strict and terminate drivers for petty incidents

The score has to be paired with what the violations are. Click on the section and a list of them appear. Lots of speeding and following too close in Unsafe? Maybe they push drivers too hard with delivery times in governed trucks.

Take the time to investigate. You are correct in saying the number in itself only tells part of the story.

Also realize that those stats change on a monthly basis. A string of bad inspections over a couple of weeks' time can put a carrier with a formerly good rating right into the dumper as quickly as the data get's posted. That can be just bad luck, a BS cop, or a bad carrier getting caught in the act.
