Hi all, I cannot seem to find the appropriate info on this, but I am curious if there is any sort of a tax exemption when buying a semi truck (Freightliner Cascadia) from Illinois to Arizona? I would be buying a truck in Illinois to be registered and operated by a company with an MC number from Arizona, where I also reside. Any help is appreciated I spent last 2 hours trying to find relevant docs but I cannot determine if I have to pay the 5.6% tax or if there is some sort of exemption. Thanks y'all!

Every state is different, but I have never paid sales tax on a vehicle in another state. I live in Washington state. We have big sales tax. They collect it when we license. Does Arizona have sales tax? If so call your DMV. They don't want you giving their money to another state.

Go here, read the entry for Arizona, it explains some of it.

I wouldn't voluntarily pay any tax to Illinois if you buy the truck there. Let them chase you down if necessary. I lived in Az. for 4 years and they have pretty good rules pertaining to purchasing used vehicles, rules in the buyers favor. Can't quite remember them though.

Are you buying this truck from a dealer, or private seller? A dealer ‘should’ know the rules.

I've bought 2 rigs out of state, both from truck dealers. Arkansas and Texas and I live in TN. No sales tax or any other fee was collected at sale, just the price of the truck. IRP in my state is where I was taxed.

I bought a used truck in Commiefornia from a fleet registered in Indiana. On the bill of sale, they charged me sales tax. When I went to DMV in Commiefornia, they tried to add tax, I showed them the bill of sale, they said ok, we won’t charge you sales tax, will take it up with the seller and Indiana if there’s a problem. All the paperwork was done via email, I only picked it up from one of the satellite yards.

I’ve bought trucks in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Montana, and Nebraska and only paid tax to the great state of South Dakota when I got my plates.
