Been having concerns about the Montgomery case and carrier vetting.
Everybody says check FMCSA/SAFER, but a lot of carriers are Not Rated. So that may catch some obvious problems, but what about a good small carrier or newer MC that just doesn’t have much history?
How are brokers determine/prove they’re not a risk? or do you just exclude them - doesn't that add more pressure as capacity tightens?
Has anyone changed the way they vet carrier since this ruling? Do you actually dig deeper, any technology platforms you recommend to try or avoid?
I’ve also been looking into telematics as a possible angle here, since it can show how drivers are actually performing on the road beyond just compliance paperwork. Curious what people think: useful proof of safety, or just another data grab?
Scotus ruling: if a carrier is Not Rated, how do you prove they’re safe?

Nobody seems to have a clean answer for this one. Not Rated don't mean bad, most small guys never get rated at all, but the tools treat no history like a problem.
On the telematics angle, I'd be careful. A lotta owner ops hear "share your telematics" and figure it's just another outfit wanting to watch every mile, not prove anything.
Real question from the carrier side for the brokers, tho: a clean small carrier that's Not Rated, what's he even supposed to hand you that you'd trust? Feels like there's nothing there that actually moves a broker.
