I see a lot of people mention the need to bring some kind of self defense item on the road, have things really gotten that bad out there where people will Mug truckers? Or is it like trucker on trucker violence? I have traveled many times cross the country in my own little truck (I hate to fly) due to having family from Arkansas to California and never once feared for my safety (and I always stopped at truck stops along the way, they always seemed the safest places to stop due to so many people being there because there is always "eyes"). Is it really that bad out there?

You may have noticed that paranoia and the typical trucker go hand in hand. I'm not saying things don't happen, but it's not to the point that you have to put on kevlar to walk from your truck to the t/s. Paying attention and using common sense are going to be more than enough to ensure your safety on the typical day out on the road.

Certain t/s have more problems, most are perfectly safe. But drivers pretty much look out for each other

Okay I thought maybe it was just paranoia, because I personally never had problems, and I would definately agree you just need to use common sense and discretion about things, it just seemed like so many people mention that as a must, I personally think a good Maglite could double as a weapon as necessary, but I just saw quite a few posts about baseball bats, and crowbars etc.

I've been places that made me nervous and a couple that made me extremely nervous but never had anything happen. I get extremely irritated at panhandlers some time but never had one call my bluff or whatever. I Quote Slim Shady, Drivers take care of each other.
