So I started trucking at a company based out of Joliet IL. They aren’t a rather big company but aren’t super small either (said they have around 150 trucks). I’m a W2 worker but they take a “deposit” for my truck $250 every week for 4 weeks. My question is what exactly is could the deposit be for? When I asked about it they said it’s because drivers would start and wreck the trucks and that’s why they require a deposit now. But to me that doesn’t make much sense. They also said that if you want to quit you have to wait 91 days because if you quit within the 3 month mark all the “costs” which were not specified fall on me as the driver. Curious what you guys think of this and if this is even legal. Currently on my first day and still waiting for a load. But that’s besides the point. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

You’re signed on with a Chicago based lease company. There will be many things going forward that don’t make much sense to you, until you realize you are likely working for free. How much real independent research did you do of this company?

What is the name of this company? That's the million dollar question....it isn't unheard of for ChicagoLand companies to do this weird type of thing. Did you sign anything? I heard of other companies keeping your paycheck if you quit during the probationary period, so it's not totally unique to the industry. They just do it differently than other companies.

I wouldn't want to work anywhere, that includes this so called escrow account for a W-2 employee.

I've never had that come up in any company I worked at or applied to

Was this mentioned in orientation or did you just blindly sign that stack of papers they dropped on your table?
If you signed something agreeing to that then I would bail before I got that first load.

I'd call in sick and never return. You don't have to tell them anything about your sickness, just that your sick.
