First things first, im not a recruiter im a driver. Theres always alot of talk on truckersreport about companies to stay away from, i wanted to share one worth checking out. Location counts, sorry guys, this job is based out of Philadelphia, so you need to live within commuting distance of the city.
The company is Honor Foods, its a subdivsion of Burris Logistics. ATM they have openings for 4 drivers. Its not the BEST gig but its not bad at all and is a solid place to go. Ill break down the highs and lows real quick.
They offer local and regional work. If regional the runs are 2-3 days long with weekends off. Youll be home 1-2 nights during the week. Local runs avg about 12 hr days some a little less some a little more, and again weekends off.
The whole fleet of trucks is freightliner cascadias that are only a couple yrs old. All automatic but you will need to know stick as sometimes youll drive a rental when your truck is in the shop and they are always 10spd manuals. The sleeper trucks all have tk apus, bunk heaters, and 1500w inverters. All trucks have driver facing dash cams, but big brother isnt watching you pick your nose. The only time anyone is actually looking is if you set it off, even then 9 times out of 10 you can ignore it. You wont hear anything unless you were doing something wrong.
Pay is by the hr not mile or %, atm the rate is $20.90hr with time and a half after 40hrs. Regional drivers will also get $50 for every night not at home on top of being able to clock more hrs. As for local dont worry about being short on hrs youll avg about 55 a wk and be home 99% of nights, some days suck and youll end up in a hotel expenses reimbursed plus $20. Benifiets package is decent and gets cheaper as you gain senority.
2yrs exp is preferred, but they will hire with 1yr exp and a very good record as long as you agree to 6wks of training. This is not otr training where you drive like a team as an indentured servent. You will be doing normal runs with a senior driver as he guides and helps you refine your skills. Youll also spend quite a bit of time with the yard jockey backing trailers. All the while you will be paid your normal rate.
This is a small company that exsists within a bigger one. Your dispatcher knows you by name and face and has to check the computer to get your truck number not the other way around. You will see and interact with them regualarly along with other drivers and office personal. In the background however big company politics do linger but im my oppinion your kinda getting the best benifiets of both types of atmosphere.
As for the work and driving. This is a foodservice delivery job in the northeast region, that should clue you in to a couple of things. You will spend alot of time driving through inner city roads with aggressive traffic. You will be backing into alot of docks at small warehouses. You will be fingerprinting freight. Theres no hand trucks down 3 flights of stairs, all product is on pallets and is unloaded with a power jack (some days you will not get one and need to rely on the customers to help). But you will have to break down pallets and organize them to the customers specifications.
This is also a teamster shop, and Pa is not a right to work state. In order to be hired you will have to join the union, this is good or bad depending on whatever your own oppinion is. The current shop steward however is a great guy and will always back you up.
Hope this helps anyone in the area looking for a better job than whatever one they may currently be at.
