Should i get my own authority

I have my own truck and do pretty well with who im leased to. But I wonder if i get my own flatbed trailer can i do well running load boards. The company im with seems to have to keep me north and northeast primarily to stay in the money zone and i do get tired of these areas all the time. Are load boards having decent enuf rates and how can i find fuel discounts to compensate? Thanks in advance for any input.
