If you have been around and worked with tires..even though the numbers on tires may be the same..it certainly doesn't guarantee they will be the actual same height. Stand some different brands up side by side and you may be suprised. If I was in a jam and had to just purchase 1 steer..the taller one, and the one with the most tread goes on the right side position.

What ever you guys say, I am wrong but I just keep doing what I am doing, it seems to work.

Nope never worked around tires, never seen or driven a truck with mismatched tires or had a truck with steering problems with just 75,000 miles on it.

    Ok sarcasm finished.

    take it as you want.

Ridgeline, you know as well as we do that you don't have to do things perfectly to see success.

I have certainly seen lots of times where you have offered #### good advice.

There are a thousand things any of us can do every day to improve. We don't have to do them.

I only have a couple years experience in a truck, but I also have experience as an industrial mechanic in a steel mill. Uneven wear is a machine killer.

Will it wreck a truck in a week? No. Will it cause inappropriate levels of wear in load bearing components and lead to early equipment issues? Yes, though it might take years to generate any significant problem.

I hope you do not take my statements as any sort of attack, because they are not intended that way. We should all share what we know.

Well said. I don't mean to discredit anyones experience or what works for them. My father had four tractor trailers when I was growing up and lots of tires and tire issues. We (he and I) fixed and mounted all our tires. Tube type , to tubeless. Now to the present times..been doing this 45 years myself. Well over 3 million miles I think I have worn out a few tires. Do I think I know it all, absolutey not. Thats why I like this forum(s).

Update on my steer tires... Tire guy came today and put on a matched Michelin Steer tire.. he said tread was at 19/32 for the new tire he put on .. and the other one i had on truck already was at 17/32.. so not much of a diff right and i should be pretty good to go right? THANKS YOUR ALL THE REPLIES.. THIS IS GREAT HAVING SOME GREAT ADVICE FROM U GUYS BTW

The difference between 17/32 and 19/32 is small enough that it can be ignored on same-type steers. You are good to go.

Ridgeline is probably right in that not much will happen to the tires. The recommendation for tires in a dual operation is no more than 5/32, but these tires are within inches of one another. Steer tires, on the other hand, are feet away. Mathematically speaking, this would allow for a much larger tread difference the further away the tires are.
