It appears that the norm on here is a bunch of people leaving negative comments about most of the companies. I drove for 9 years in the past and after being out of it for 5 years I am trying to get back into it. I am currently in Arizona and relocating back to Southern Illinois in the next 3 weeks. I lost my CDL in 2007 due to not renewing my medical card. Upon deciding to go back to driving, I contemplated going through a refresher course but decided against it. The first time I went through a school was in 1999, and personally I thought it was a joke. All of the skills I learned was through a trainer on the road after I was with my first company......not at the school. I had a job lined up in Illinois hauling bulk tanker but then discovered they do not except pets in the trucks. So again I know that limits my search. I went ahead and got my CDL permit, waited the appropriate time and went to a third party tester and passed. I now have a full class A CDL. I am being told that I do in fact need a refresher course for most of the comapnies that I have spoken to. My problem now is I dont have the time to do it in Phoenix, my lease is ending and have to make my way to Illinois. I have found FFE, they offer a refresher course. For MY situation FFE seems like a good thing.

The problem I am having is every thread on here is filled with negative comments on FFE. People complaining there are always issues with their paychecks, most lead to believe that it is issues with paying lumpers and not getting reimbursed. I am ready to go do this, but everytime I see these comments it knocks me down a notch. I am a good driver, I stopped driving before to go to college, I graduated college and cant find a job at the moment so getting back behind the wheel. I am not looking for a bunch of FFE bashing, I would like someone with some experience to explain to me why these drivers are claiming to have issues with their pay. Are they possibly forgetting to send in reciepts, or request the reimbursement on the qualcomm or whatever they use. I just cant imagine there is someone sitting in payroll telling themself "I wanna see how many drivers I can screw over today" I realize these big companies are not the cream of the crop, but like I said I have been out of the seat for 5 years and I need to get my foot in the door. And for my personal situation this seems like a fit for me.

Just remember there are always two sides to every story and an unhappy driver is more likely to post here than a happy one. That's just the way it is. I started my career with a company (CRST) that is bashed big time here. And what I found out is half of what you hear is true and the other half could have been avoided if the driver would have communicated a little differently. I wasn't always happy with CRST and the fact is I would never return to the company after seeing what other options are out there, but the fact is they gave me my start and I managed to do pretty good with them because I had a positive outlook and I knew how to communicate effectively.

Thanks FatDaddy. That is precisely what I plan on doing. Wish we could hear from some of the happy drivers. LOL. Well I am pretty sure I am gonna pull the trigger on this one. I will bust my ##### and hope for the best.

One guy posted on here recently, he went through refresher with Raider Express in Ft. Worth & had only very positive things to say about the course. I've also noticed the remarks concerning FFE & it seems to me the big issue is teams getting the best runs. Most companies do that though; just business decisions. A person that prefers solo, needs to think about that after CDL school & refresher, when he is making a decison as to which company after that. Look at companies where teaming is not a priority.

Madmax someone just made this comment to me recently; there in no chain and lock keeping you tied to a company. So, if they are going to give you what you need to get started again go for it, and down the road if things are not working out like they should you always have the option to move on. You sound like a smart guy I am sure you will do fine go where ever you decide... Good luck!

If this is what you wanna do then ignore the negativity you read.My first company was Werner. They for many ppl are worse then FFE and I stayed there 3 yrs.Companies may shorten ppl out of pay but like you said it could be because they did'nt turn in their trps before the cut off day then in that case you get those trps and reimbursements on the next pay. Some that don't receive the miles have noone to blame but themselves. The more you sit and not start running when your 10 hr brk is over then yes you'll be the one at the bottom of your dispatchers list for lds.Start looking up good things on FFE and don't read anything on bad things.Whatever company you do decide on,once you get to orientation leave all the negative comments you read at home and you'll do fine. Also go in with a positive attitude.

Thanks Chinatown. I hadnt come across Raider Express, I think Im gonna give them a call. And yes nctrucker, From what I am being told from other companies as soon as I get some recent experience companies will then accept all my previous experience as well. So that should provide more options for me. Thanks guys for the input.

When you see many negative posts, by many different drivers, over a long time, all saying basically the same thing, it will lead a prudent person to a reasonable conclusion that something must be negative about the company.

I think that you're spot on with that line of thinking.

I'm finding some common threads (no pun intended) within the complaints threads. If you read those complaint threads closely, and read between the lines, then you will discover the real reasons behind the complaint. Either the company and its culture didn't match with what the complainer was expecting, or the complainer didn't manage the employer / employee relationship properly.

edit: FFE was on my short list of training companies when I was ready to pull the trigger. Unfortunately, when I was ready, they were not. They were not hiring in my area at that time.

Also, I believe that FFE's fleet is exclusively automatic transmissions. You won't be getting much refresher in the way of shifting.

Not necessarily. Those who are unhappy tend to be the most vocal. The happy ones simply go about their business.
