I got a talkin' to the other day. "Hey kb, camera recorded you running a stop sign last week." Well, guilty as charged. It was the middle of the night in the boonies where two two lane highways intersect, and I did not come to a complete stop. I think it showed me going 5mph.

We just got these new cameras, the old ones would have a light that changed from green to red when it was recording. This one records 24/7. The manager didn't tell me why this clip was sent to him, but I think the camera has some AI that recognizes a stop sign, then flagged me for not coming to a complete stop. I did not hit a bump, brake hard, swerve or anything that would make the old camera record.

This seems a little ridiculous. Might be time to find a new job.

    Cop pulls over KB.

“You didn’t stop at the stop sign”

    KB - “Well, I slowed down “.

Cop pulls out his nightstick and starts beating KB, and says . . .

“You want me to stop , or slow down?!”

    :)

It ain't ridiculous man. KB wants their drivers to drive better. That's all. Many companies are going this direction in the name of insurance discounts. I imagine all will do this eventually.

There is no AI required, they have your GPS track and your speed over ground.

I have been driving with cameras for a while now. One of the promises that the companies that sell them is improving driver performance through coaching.

Assuming you don't tend to have lots of violations as a driver the best course of action is to view it with that mindset when they call and ask questions and make it clear you want to improve.

The other selling points from these companies is to help companies identify their highest risks. IMHO driver attitude will greatly impact how companies end up using these for or against drivers. Most of these DMs would rather reward safe driving vs chew you out.

In my experience with my coworkers the cameras almost always end up protecting the CMV drivers or at least proving that typically a 4-wheeler also in the accident was also at fault.

But yes the days of being a scofflaw and blowing through stop signs is over. Note that the camera doesn't even need to be on for them to catch this. The vehicle speed not reaching zero and a GPS fix is more than enough.

Why are you running a stop sign at 5mph? How do you still have a job even?

Ok I'll come to complete stop from now on and take it as a learning experience.

It makes no difference of course, but the intersection was highways 17 and 89 near Varna, IL. Four way stop.

I don't drive for KB, those are my initials.

A lot of calm, rational replies to this thread.
