First of all;
The book you cited is highly controversial on its historical content, not to say, a typical victimhood half-truth narration of events that serve the purpose to boost the color of antisemitism in the country against which the agenda of Holocaust reparations by various jewish organizations has been aggressively pushed for a while.

Second of all;
Even though it was restricted and required permits, you could own guns in pre WWII Poland.
That said, Poland under German Occupation was a country were gun possesion was prohibited under death panelty and Germans did not joke about it. Neither did they joke, if anybody was hiding or aiding Jews.
Frankly, I am quite lost why you brought this book to illustrate your point.

Doubtful. The operation was overseen by SS and Gestapo - militarized formations - similar to Einsatz gruppen committing systematic murders of Jews in Eastern Europe.

 

First off, "Neighbors" isn't 'highly controversial'. Since it's publication there have been numerous other scholarly works that have highlighted local populations assistance in the atrocities committed by occupying German forces - from France to Norway and everywhere inbetween. The sole legitimate criticism is the down playing of the role of the SS during the Jedwabne massacre. A significant portion of the criticism comes from groups who also espouse anti-semitic rhetoric. A large part of Polish identity is their resistance of German occupiers and the subsequent subjugation of the USSR, with all the atrocities being attributed to external forces. The real history is more complicated, which "Neighbors" documents.

But that's not why I made that post. A common trope is "the Holocaust wouldn't have happened if the populace was armed", which is what I thought @Flat Earth Trucker was insinuating. It denies the local populations complicity in the pogroms and ignores the overwhelming power of the State to impose it's will. There's a reason why Shay's Rebellion, the Whiskey Rebellion, and the Battle of Athens all involved the seizing of the local armory. It does not matter how well armed the local populace is when the State chooses to impose it's will. What matters is how willing the agents of the State are to impose the desire of the State. When the action of the State is against a minority population the question becomes 'will the majority protect the minority or will they capitalize off their subjugation?'. When that is the question, the rules regarding weapon possession are a moot point. A minority of Jedwabane's community attacked a smaller minority and the majority stood by allowing it. The legality of firearms played no part in the pogrom.
