Yesterday, I was at a Fed-Ex terminal to pick up a package that had to be signed for and I didn't want to wait for a retry in case noone was home again to sign for it.
Anyway as I was leaving there is a long access road and at the end the road curves around right to a stop sign. As I was coming up to the sign I saw a big truck that was going to make a left turn onto the road I was on. Instead of coming right up to the stop sign, I just slowed and stopped about 30 feet back so he could make the turn without having to worry about hitting me and going farther into the intersection to make a wide swing. As he came by me, he gave a couple of toots on his city horn and wave. I was surprised to actually get an acknowledgment. It was appreciated on both sides. Just glad to see some drivers out there can still give a thank you to a 4 wheeler.
I want to add that just because I am as student wanting to drive is not the reason I did this. I would have done it anyway.
Some truckers still appreciate courtesy

Glad to hear it. Im sure it seems like a small thing to do, but to a truck driver who fights with 4 wheelers all day, it is a huge thing. I did the same for a driver pulling out of a Rite-Aid. I stopped far back and waved him on. He was ALL over that window waving!

Yes alot of them seem to appreciate common courtesy!
Have you never seen the 4 wheelers that pull right up to the stop sign/stop light and a big rig has to make that turn and the car won't back up for them?
I think that is so RUDE!
I always make it a point if it's me in that spot to give a truck plenty of room to make their turn safely.
Of course if its one of our trucks and I didn't do that...they all know me....Iam sure I would be told about it...lol -
Thanx for thinking about what Big trucks need, space wise, to maneuver, and helping us out.
We REALLY DO appreciate that you do that.
When I'm driving my pick-um-up or automobile, and come upon a Big truck that could use a break, and give them one,.......the look on some of their faces is priceless.
We don't expect folks to do that, and when they do, it surprises us.
It might be rude of a Big truck driver not to acknowledge your actions, but know that when you do that, you're being safer. If y'all weren't already stopped, waiting for us,........some other yeahoo just might do something dumb. Your being there CAN prevent that, and IMO, often does.
Thanx again!
Once upon a time,....................
I was trying to turn left into a truckstop from a two lane highway. The traffic coming the other way was VERY heavy and NO one would give me, and the two Big trucks and MANY 4-wheelers behind me waiting, a break.
UNTIL,..................
A motorhome approached. I could see the occupants. They were two folks in their early to mid sixties. Probably retired and spending their kid's inheritance. Momma was driving and pops was in the jump seat. I gave them my most ~~~OH PLEASE~~~ look, and they both responded with a big smile, and stopped to let the the two trucks behind me, and me, make our turns.
I saluted them and put on my ~~~MANY THANX~~~ face as I made my left turn.
I didn't realize they pulled into the truckstop behind me until I saw them at a cashier down from me, and it looked like they had their grandson with them, trying to decide which color Smooth-E he wanted to add to the grandparent's bottled drinks.
While they were deciding, I asked another cashier to estimate the costs for all their drinks, and gave her the money, plus a tip for her efforts, and asked her to tell them that the drinks were covered by a thankful Big truck driver.
I figured, if they were as friendly on the road as they seemed to be, they'd be trying to figure out which ONE they were friendly to, who actually did that.
And I have a feeling their young ward would be provided an educational explanation as to the virtues of friendliness on the road as a result.
If nothing else, they had refreshments.
On the house.
What's not to like?

I'm probably weird but, I enjoy doing things like that. If I were a cowboy, I'd be The Lone Ranger.
Who WAS that masked man?
As I ride out of sight.
HIGH OOH S I L V E R !!
A W A Y,...............................!!
Oh Cisco!
Oh Poncho!
Oopps!
Wrong cowboys. -
It was a classic Rockwell scene... and it made this old sentimental fool all warm and fuzzy inside watching them. I was so grateful to have witnessed their "night out" that I quietly paid their bill and we left.
Life is good... and I hope that some day I am given the opportunity to grow old and share ice cream with a dear friend on a warm Sunday evening.
Thanks, AfterShock, for reminding me of that night... -
I love the courtesy too! It works both ways no matter what we drive. Giving trucks room and even slowing a good enough ways back when making a left turn off a rural highway (in a truck) onto a rural highway if there's another 18 wheeler making a right turn from a stop he/she is at. We have a very congested stop sign due to truckers using the rural highways and you can't see what's coming or going from that one side due to houses, trees etc. all one has to do is think a little bit.
Here's another good example of why people in 4 wheelers need to know how much space a truck needs to turn. Seriously when I was a teen driver, that's the last thing that was on my mind lol. I wish everyone had to go through this for their drivers tests! -
Thank YOU for sharing your heart-warming story.
Weirdo.
