I can't imagine living there and having to deal with this event. What do you do? Leave? stay? You're dammed if you do and dammed when you get back. What about your job? Will your employer be able to use you, anyway? What if you have nobody to stay with inland inside a reasonable distance? Hotels are all full, gas will be running out. Store shelves are empty and will be for a while. Electricity will be off for many weeks once the waters recede.
Those people have to be prepared in advance with lots of water and non-pershiable foods ... I guess all you can do is pack your car with family and a few extra changes of clothes and then load it up with all the food and water you had sense to be prep'd with and head west and pray for the best.
But they chose to live on the coast. Crap can/will happen.
