The Lady and I plan on moving to Sparks, Nv in the near future. Hey @Chinatown it’s no Vegas but at least it’s in the same state!

I’m currently with ABF in so cal at a small terminal. Not sure how easy transferring would be with the union rules and whatnot, but either way I’d have to start all over again with doing more dock work at first as a P&D driver. I’d rather go somewhere I can be driving right away. I’m wondering, aside from trying to transfer with ABF, does anyone have experience/work at any of the companies in Sparks? I know SAIA, XPO, R&L, OD, FXF, TForce, Oak Harbor, Estes and the like are in the area

Luckily it seems like depending on openings there’s plenty of options out there but sometimes it really depends on the size of the terminal, etc . I’m planning to stick with P&D. Got my start with Reddaway so don’t plan on going back there especially given the wholesale changes starting that are sure to be a mess.

Any input would be appreciated. I have the local Estes terminal manager down the street here in California ready to give me a job as soon as I want it but knowing we plan on bailing out of Cali, I’m not sure if I should take him up on his offer, unless transferring at Estes is an easy process.

Congratulations on moving to a no-income tax state and no food taxes at the grocery store.
Yeah, those companies are in the Sparks area, but I don't know which is best. You're already experienced, so lots of choices.
I remember when you started with Reddaway.

Good choice, we're facing some water shortages here in Clark County. Sparks gets water from the Truckee River and we get it from the Colorado River.

I am at Saia in Sparks, Nv, and we were told we will be moving into a new terminal around the beginning of next year, that should bring us more runs and routes when that happens, all the big LTLs have been running ads for drivers for the Reno area, mostly linehaul but I have seen P&D ones too, I know Old Dominion has been hiring, I have friends working over there, who keep encouraging me to come over there, but I won't because I don't want to start over again.

Oh yeah, Western Flyer does bring up a great point, installing chains is a must if you are considering working in this area, mostly for linehaul drivers who go over Donner, run up north to K Falls or Medford, even running east to Carlin or south to Independence or Tonopah, there is just some days you need them, as far as P&D drivers they usually luck out for the most part although we can and have got snow on the valley floor, the ones mostly affected are the drivers who have routes up in the Truckee/Lake Tahoe area.

Yea I figured P&D would only have to deal with chaining up in those areas. Thanks for the input.

I live in Sparks and worked for Estes for 5 years. They need drivers pretty bad, good money, decent benefits. You would most likely have a bid run if running linehaul. City would have to cover linehaul runs at night. It’s not a bad place to work, pretty chill. Comes with typical BS like not getting paid while waiting on trailers. Running Donner all winter isn’t fun but all the ltl in the area run the hill every night until you have seniority to get an east bound bid. Extraboard is out 5 off 2 usually for the weekend

No pay while waiting for trailers? Does that happen very often?
