Going to be moving down to the Austin/San Antonio region and will be looking to purchase a truck. Coming from the Midwest and Mid Atlantic Regions pulling chemical tankers where no blower/compressor has been needed because customers do all offloading themselves. What tractor do you think would be best for the job, assuming that it will see some oilfield work? Looking at what set-up will provide the most flexibility such as gearing and transmission, axle ratio, wheelbase, horsepower, etc., etc.

How fast do you want to cruise the hwy?
3.55 axles will max 96mph at 2100 rpm with overdrive. A direct drive trans and 2.36 axles will max out at 80is at 2100. Are you wanting new or used truck? Does fuel avg matter? -
Sorry...used truck and I don't need to be anywhere too quickly. Looking for 5/6 MPG.
-
Anything should be able to get 5 to 6 mpg. Ecxept a Acert cat sometimes. Buy a nice old exempt truck. If you have the cash saved. But if you are getting a loan most likely need to go to a Dealer. Avoid the Volvo d13,d16, ISX, And Detroit DD16 engines.
spindrift Thanks this. -
And do not buy a 8v71, or any 2 stroke Detroit from way back.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Heck, you must be a Cat fan, lol. What else is there?!
-
13L engine /22.5 rubber and high 5th wheel . That kind of truck will probably have a 10 speed......
Tare weight as low as possible..... not my style of truck but for chemical road work off the gulf coast probably the best specs...... -
I prefer the series 60. CAT is a severe use engine. For bullracks, or heavy haul.
Otherwise it is not needed. But I do believe they are the longest lasting engine also.
Try to get a tripak apu for your truck also. Saves fuel, and wear on engine parts. -
Gonna be a crowded frame with pump/compressor and tripack...

There are two sides to a frame.
