I started CDL class today and want to say thanks to all the helpful information I have read over the last few months on this forum before deciding to go into this crazy career. It's helped me to prepare for what's ahead and to and learn all I can in class.
I feel bad for some of my classmates though - you should have heard the ooh's and ahh's when they heard they were getting free lunch from a visiting recruiter next week. I have a feeling that a lot of these guys have no idea what they are getting themselves into. One guy in my class was talking out load wondering how big of a TV he will be able to fit in his truck...on day one of our class! Not the first thing you should be worrying about IMO!
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
Thanks Guys
Started CDL School - Thanks

How sorry is that?! Not only do they spend millions of dollars in advertising to get YOU to work for THEM but now they are buying the newbies pizza to con them into signing up with their company! Unbelievable!!!
Guys/gals if this doesn't set off alarms in your heads something is seriously wrong with you! Besides a child molester offering candy, where else in this world does someone bribe another individual with food for employment? Is your company that bad that you offer to pizza to even listen to the brainwashing?
Once again... guys/gals there is a reason these mega-carriers need a constant recycle of fresh meat! Its called cheap labor! Do you know how much money they make using under paid trainee's to haul their freight? It works out to be so far under minimum wage its ridiculous! They get away with it because the claim they are training you! After that, do you honestly think they want you to stay with them and become a long term employee? NO!!!! THEY DON'T!!! They would have to pay you if they did! You know those sweat shops in China and Mexico? This is no diferent! Well other than you do have air conditioning (but good luck idling that truck over the summertime!).
Folks, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that you have to go these mega-carriers for employment! Don't listen to these recruiters telling you its your only option. Its not! That's a flat out lie! Keep in mind that these recruiters for the companies and for the schools get paid to send you to them. So do you honestly think they are going to recommend any other company to you let alone a good one?!
I challenge all of you to get a job without driving for a mega-carrier! It really isn't that hard. You may have to spend an extra 10 minutes on the computer.
There are so many great smaller companies out there to work for! Ones in which you can make really good money driving for and also be happy working for them. Not to mention they will actually treat you like a human being instead of a number.
You folks are taking the initiative to better your lives and sign up for school for a new career beginning. Why not keep going with that initiative and find a good company to drive for? Its like once you made it to the school part you throw up your hands and put your lives and career decisions in someone else's hands!
Sure I understand that most of you don't know any better and after those recruiters come to your school for the brainwashing it does sound pretty convinceable and that poster they show you of the nice brand new shiny tractor trailer driving around that scenic mountain curve where there's no traffic and the roads are clear (sorry that's funny). Then they all tell you you will make $80,000 a year and have lots of home time and blah, blah, blah.
Not true folks....
Take the extra time, the extra few minutes and find yourselves a great company to drive for right off the bat! I'm telling you that its 100% possible and really isn't that hard at all. The reward will be earning way more money than a mega-carrier and being a lot happier in life!
Good luck....theurge, DriverToBroker, superpet39 and 2 others Thank this. -
I didnt get pizza. i didnt get to see a shiny truck on an open road! Not fair!
Ive seen that above post somewhere else..almost word for word. troll?
I take no ones word for anything, I live my own experiences. Ive already been OTR once before...so im good to go, thanksMy experience has shown me that people who regularly bash the mega haulers, had issues, themselves. Its what you make of it. If you demand to be home every two weeks, then your FM is gonna treat u like crap...and you will get what you deserve. Its all about how you go at it. I will be out 30 days at a time. I also have my hazmat endorsement now. So i will not have issues getting miles. and since i wont have a "home", per se, my time off locations will varry.

Sounds like you got it all figured out!
Yes I'm a troll, real name is Shrek22!
No I'm not bashiing, just trying to give the ones who don't know any better a little insight as to how these mega-carrier operate. Yes some drivers do have careers with them but ultimately that is the goal of the mega-carrier.
Yes its all about how you go at it, but if you're going at it with a dispatcher who's responsible for hundreds of drivers then you aren't going to get too far! You are simply a number in a stack of papers on their desk, randomly chosen for the next available freight. Doesn't work like that at the smaller carriers! -
