I decided to swap engines in my Pete. 1994 3406E model. When I took the old one out I wire tied the connectors together so they could be put back on the correct post. After I connected the wires and connect the battery, it arcs. What I'm thinking is the issue is I have one wire going to the back of the starter and then there is another small wire connect to the selinoid. I'm thinking the big wire with it needs to go to the selinoid as well??

You’re probably forgetting the crossover wire that goes from the negative post to the solenoid or you have 2 wires in the wrong spot, simple as that.

The back of the starter is the negative side, correct?

yes the single post on the butt end, the positive has a strap that connects the motor and solenoid
