Have purchased a 1980 Pete 359 with a spicer 6x4, a cat 3406a and a 63" sleeper. Great project truck but has been sitting in a farmers field for the last decade. Gonna have it towed to my place and will get started on my new project. However I was wondering if folks had some tips on best method to get the motor fired up. Obviously swap all the fuel/oil/filters before cranking over but any othersuggestions, stories or tips would be welcome as I kick off this awesome project.

All you need for the next 5 years is a little food, good bit of money and a cot to sleep on. Great find, have fun!

Make sure the fuel system is operating properly. Not sure if Cats had the issue of fuel rails sticking open when they sat for long periods of time, but that could lead to a runaway motor when you do get it fired up. Make sure you've got something handy to block the intake and smother it if it does take off.

Chances are you won't need it...but if you do, you'll be glad you had it.

Here's an old Detroit that did that:

One thing you will need is a good 12v power supply. Sitting that long she will be a tickle tuff to turn over the first time. Might even wanna pull the fuel supply line and let her spin over a bit on the starter to get good oil pressure then give her the fuel back.

Bar the engine over by hand a few times to make sure it at least does turn over. I would also crack all the fuel lines loose at the injectors to let them bleed clean and fresh fuel once you get it to crank. You don't want that old gummy junk getting into the injectors aside from what is already there. Also, you will rebuild that oil pressure before it fires too to make sure it does make pressure.
