When I drove a Tow truck in Santa Monica, Ca. the city council had to approve rates and qualifying to do Police impounds.

Its alot of hard work, sweat,PIA dealing with people and the best
time i ever had. Got to know some GREAT PEOPLE, mostly the cops
i had to deal with alot as a Rotation list company. Get to know some
of the BEST and HONEST & RESPECTED repair shops in your area.
You can recommend them, but be careful of who you choose....
Having the right equipment is very important to do the best work
    and the safest..... GOOD LUCK

First of all, you can actually get a big rig wrecker for fairly cheap. I got towed once by a company in Las Cruces, i asked about starting my own wrecker service...guy immediately offered to sell me his truck for $45,000 ..dunno if he was totally serious about that. But the truck was a 1990 volvo wia, he told me it cost him $60,000 to do the conversion, and i know that's a $10,000 tractor....

Most areas really dont need more big wreckers though...
