Before I started school I accepted that I was going to have to go OTR for a little while to build my resume, before looking for something local or even regional.
I'm torn honestly, while I'm very excited about the travel it's the time away from the family that's a bummer. If only I could win that ###### lottery... -
I have hauled for my self not for other people. My business is falling off and I thought about hotshoting but as I talk to others they say if they could get out they would be gone. They tell me dispatchers take pay under the table. You can't get loaded when arrive have to wait till the next day. Can't get unloaded. I have a 2007 GMC 4500 with 32000 miles on it. A 25 ft half tilt trailer. All my stuff is payed for. Don't owe a person in the world. Got other trailers but they smaller. Don't know to give it a try or just let my equipment set. Would like some real advise. Not that depressing stuff this is something I don't have to do and I don't want to kill my self living in a truck. Some of my heavy haul friends are not home but 6 weeks to two months a year if that. Don't need that.

have you ever tried uship to get loads. some people make good money there.
-
Uship ? No idea
-
it is a website where people post things they need shipped. You bid on the shipment and if you win you get to ship that item for that amount. Lets say i have a large container of antiques. I post it on there saying where it is located and where it needs to be shipped to. Then truckers and independents with a truck and trailer bid on how much they would charge to ship it. when the time runs out the lowest price wins. But sometimes the shipper will pay more for someone with more experience. Look up the show Shipping Wars. They use uship.

What companies have you tried for? There are some out there that will hire students. I know of a few.
-
Concerning getting a job-most all companies now want someone who has been through a school (a real scam). If you have a CDL, you are federally qualified to drive over-the-road in the US and Canada. However, there is so much money behind the scam, that companies say you must attend a school (or their school). It will be hard to get a job without doing so. I have driven over the road for 13 years with no major accidents, then worked overseas for 10 years. I have my CDL now, but no big company will talk to me because I did not go to a school. As for getting a job after school, you may have to try a 4-8 truck company that is small and will put you on. Most of the time they treat you better than the big companies anyhow.
I learned on my own, and did the CDL on my own, but companies and the feds don't like it if you get out from under their control (such as I did). Now, they passed laws and company policies that make it extremely difficult to obtain a driving position without schooling. Most of what they teach is never used anyhow from what I have learned. Now, the b******ds in Ohio pass a law that makes you wait 2 weeks after you get your permit to test-for what reason? Can't understand them as*h***es. Next year, they plan to pass a law for everyone to go to a school. The problem is-that does not guarantee you a job at all. So what good is a federally approved CDL license if you have to go to a school and prove you an operate an 18? Isn't that what the CDL test is about? It seems the companies are contradicting the feds..hmmmmm????
Now about PAM: called them, no return call after 7 days.
Now about Heartland, called them, told them I am experienced with 13 years and expected some kind of sign-on bonus. They told me "Go buy your own company". (forgot his name, think it was Adam)
Now about Ozark, won't touch me and told me I need to go to a school and get 2 years and them call them. I told the recruiter I have 13 years. He said, not recent- but yet they advertize for only 3 months??? Hmmmmmm???
Now about Paschall, I spoke to one rude b***h. Can't remember her name. She tried to get smart and tell me I only have 3 months experience if I have been away from driving 10 years-I got her straight and am sure they would not be a fit with me. Rude as all H**** to me even when I was polite and diplomatic.
So, I see what new students are up against, but you are not the only ones. It is one big scam to get as many drivers into the schools and get government subsidies and a kickback for training someone without a job. The more they run throught the schools the more the companies make. The whole system is flawed from top to bottom. More crap and less money and qualified driverw without jobs.Joel Leland and nicholas_jordan Thank this.
