So last week while we preloaded slag pots for this week. Somewhere in West Virginia, boss needed an extra escort to make the fun 12 mile run back to the pad site. While I've driven this route a few times and escorted a few times. I've never had to sit in a pick up behind a load and steer it.

Man I have to give credit to those that do this as a living. It was a stressful hour of turn this way and that way. Motor even stalled a couple times. Why we use gas motors on perimeter decks is a wonder.

Would I do it again? Hell yes!

I have found it even scarier to be 230’ ahead and trust a dude to steer you not into a ditch or sign or car or ....... It is a very odd arrangement

You know, I have never gave it much thought until I did it. Like how hard can it be. So while listening to the company radio, plus CB radio which is required to be on. Add to the challenge the driver pulling the load wasn't slowing much except on the hard turns. We all made and didn't hit anything. Yay!

That area south of Wheeling and Clarksburg area. There's also a cracker plant going in on the Ohio side of the river at Moundsville.

Either you lowered your standards or that stuff pays better than what I thought

it was supposed to be steady work
And I have very low standards for the right price

I will tell you - I would much rather pull my big trailer - at least I control the entire thing.

If you have a good steerman then the gig is easy , if you don’t you are. Totally screwed. Half the turns you can’t see anything in the mirror except for a white wall and the other half is so far back the tractor is around the corner and down the road before the rear axles and nearly 60’ of tail swing get to it

The steer trailers I pulled in the 80’s and 90’s were hardwired into the truck. They also didn’t have controllers on the trailer either. The driver of the truck was the only one that could steer it. The longest I’ve ever hauled was 150 foot bridge beam. About 8 feet in front of the fifth wheel and 30 feet out the back of the trailer. I’d guess the trailer was about 110-120 feet back.
