Does anyone have first hand knowledge, friends or any insight beyond what the website offers for Steven's Transport? I've been reading a lot of online reviews and found a trucker that reviews different companies by calling the recruiters and talking with drivers and even gives his opinion whether he would be willing to work for them. He recommends against working for them.

If he hasn't worked there, then I would ignore his opinions. Just because he wouldn't work there, doesn't mean it's not a good outfit for someone else.

Based on what I've seen they aren't one of the better fleets out there.

Good point. As there are so many varying opinions, I think he is simply a reference but he does a recorded phone in interview to see if they answer his questions with consistent information. I can tell you that he has been a driver for 10 years and I can mention his site if it makes any difference. I was considering Stevens because they have an attractive allowance I would receive through the VA. I think they only have 2 to 3 week runs available and I think it would be better to look for something regional (home weekly) until I can get my sea legs. McLane, J B Hunt and UPS have the best VA allowances but no current openings in my area. Stevens is next followed by Swift and Schneider. Even though McLane, J B Hunt and UPS don't have any current openings, do you think training schools have an inside path for positions that aren't advertised regardless of the company?

Are you talking about the VA paying for part of your CDL school? If so, every community college has similar programs, through the VA. One thing you have to be aware of is some companies are sticklers for what CDL school you attend. They won’t hire a grad from just any school. If you go through a trucking company program, VA assisted or not, you’ll be obligated to them for a certain period of time.

Some schools do have jobs that aren't posted. That's how I got a good job one time. Graduated from cdl school and took a crappy job. About a month or so later some 0/0 with 3 or 4 trucks called looking for a driver. The school recommended me for some reason. Anyway, I took the job and it was a good one hauling boats from the factory to 48 states and Canada.

I've seen that guy that you're talking about. He called the company I worked for as well, 2 times. He just gets the recruiting pitches from the company. Our recruiters told him the same thing they told me prior to when I got on. Didn't get any G-14 classified info. Lol. As for Stevens Transport, they're as good as anybody to get started with, I would think. I came across a driver for them in Colorado. She was the sweetest lady. She had been driving for them for 4 years and loved it. Met her at Coke Denver. She was making a delivery on a load she picked up in California, so there's an idea of some of their runs. One of our drivers left there to come work for us, and he liked it there. He ran well for them. You'll have your drivers that think they suck. Your experience will be based on what you put into it.

Roehl does this, even though they wont admit it, many long standing employees in the office and mantinance do.

They burned the bridge with fox valley technical college over greed, Rick roehl has some suspect morals.

Now roehl intentionally gives anyone who got their cdl from FVTC a hard time and rough employment.

They also get a pretty penny kick back from the government for training new cdl students while charging anyone who doesn't pass, $7k

My plan is/was to have the VA pay for school because I can receive housing allowance while attending and most of the companies will reimburse me for the tuition on top of that. If I choose a company with an apprenticeship program, I can receive, depending on the company, one or two years of housing allowance in addition to my pay. As for the training schools that companies will hire you from, all of the companies I have looked into will hire from the few schools I have narrowed my choices to but that is an excellent point and detail to be aware of. Also, I am 99.99% certain I will not be attending any company training academy. I don't want the possibility of something happening and get stuck owing their inflated tuition costs back. I also don't believe any of the schools in Virginia are really worth attending so I have narrowed my list down to Fox Valley Technical College and College of Southern Maryland. Unfortunately Fox Valley is in Wisconsin which is a bit far though they seem to have one of the best programs from my research. CSM is a reasonable distance and they also seem to have a very solid program. There are a few other considerations but those are my leaders for now.
