I had no idea students are held responsible for their tuition if they don't successfully complete the GYCDL program. My understanding is that you are responsible for the tuition if you do not honor the time/mileage requirement which is 120k miles if you go through their GYCDL program. It's 40k if you already have your CDL and receive their standard training with a mentor. I wonder if the VA is aware of this practice? Roehl might be able to get away with doing this by claiming the students just aren't cut out for the industry or say many students aren't capable of passing the rigorous testing standards or whatever.

Yes....this is the often-undisclosed "dark side" of getting a CDL at a carrier's facilities.

And pretty much all of them are like that.

The alternative solution: get in on relevant grants, scholarships...&/or available retraining programs...then get that CDL ON YOUR OWN -- at a nearby tech school...or comm college.

I took evening/night classes...3 times per week...& spread it out over 4 months.

It was a very relaxed, laid back learning pace.

I would recommend that option to anyone.

Later on -- when you graduate out -- you then exit into a totally level playing field -- with no obligations to anyone or any particular carrier.

I just got off the phone with a recruiter from Roehl as I became curious about their practices. You are spot on about no longer offering training through FVTC. He wouldn't tell me why they no longer have a relationship with them but his voice sounded troubled when I asked. They now do their own training. That's too bad because FVTC has an outstanding program. Also, it is really disturbing that a student is responsible in full for $7000.00 regardless of how far you are into the training as well as the reason/s you don't complete the training. This has really changed my opinion of their company and it is disturbing that a number of companies operate like this all the while taking advantage of drivers such as low pay, wrong pay or no pay for their time.

Not to sound like/be a smart aleck -- but....get used to it.

Welcome to the wide, wonderful, oh-so-cozy world of first-year trucking.... o_O
