What would you haul? What type of equipment? Own authority or under someone else's?

I WOULDN’T. I would stay with a good company that paid all overtime, all medical benefits, holiday pay, vacation pay, pension. 401k etc. Your guaranteed 100% to make more money than being O/O. I should know. I wish I would’ve listened 46 years ago.

The unsuccessful ones would probably be better to ask. What would they do differently?

I agree with @Diesel Dave in general though. If I wanted to make a career out of this, I'd work towards linehaul with a LTL company, or do foodservice.

This ^ i love being an O/O sure. But gods #### is it a lot of work a lot of stress and the pay while better is not a LOT better then being a company driver. If i could do it again id have stayed a company driver, saved up cash and gotten a license doing just about anything else and never drove a truck again.

What kind of job would you have wanted outside of trucking? If you could start over?

HVAC tech, not install, electrician, anything but plumbing in the trades. Dam near anything besides trucking IMHO. I actually still like driving, but man it wears you out, the f'd thing about driving is when you really hate it, it calls you back and makes you think you love it. Actually if I had my choice I would just open up a one man shop restoring older trucks and selling them, the market wouldn't really let you make enough doing that though. Then I could just take it out when I am done with it and rip it around bobtail and be a menace until it sells
