I admit that except for a few years when I was pneumatic tanker yanking, I’m a door swinger and roller.

So I ask this seriously….. Besides a bulk head, what could’ve prevented this? Chains in an X? Or something else?

Sons Hero and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this.

I’ve hauled a lot of round stock over the years as well as steel pipe. I always “belly wrap” in at least 2 places along with the other over the top chains. When you belly wrap it pulls the stock / pipe together and makes it more difficult for any or all pieces to move forward in a hard braking situation. The round stock in the bottom pic averages around 2800 to 3200 pounds each, no aluminum head board is going to stop it, may slow it down when it comes forward like a ram, but stopping it is very slim. As mentioned earlier driving like you have some sense helps too…

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I’m gonna stick door swinging and rolling and probably tanker yanking of if I ever get tired of LTL.

I can definitely admit open deck-OD stuff just isn’t for me.

Just have some new stuff to learn

may neighbor does heavy haul and he regularly hauls a 60k bulldozer hull

he uses 12 chains and 12 binders

    three on each corner ,
One to the opposite side , one down and one forward or back .

    Sons Hero Thanks this.

That looks like the tow truck/wrecker driver may have been plugging into the truck’s diagnostic system, you’re guess is as good as mine.

Wrap chains around the load with a binder on each side pulling it tight together. I used to wrap everything, mill rolls, rebar, pipe, even with loose loads of lumber I'd wrap a hand strap around. Guys would mock me for over securement but who cares
