I have to agree with Corky
Many times while trying to work out a route the GPS unit will pick the fastest because it saves 1 minute over a 1200 mile trip, but it has more roads.
or as in today I am taking I-80 instead of I-90 to avoid snow storms
and all it wants to do is keep me headed back up to I-90.
Google maps shows you other possible routes and I use this and my atlas to actually plan my route before I start driving.
It would be nice if it showed different route times and miles and then you picked your route...

When looking at the detailed view (turn by turn directions) you can select to see the hwy view. Here you can select a highway and choose to avoid a road for an entire leg of the trip. Ths way it will not just try to route you back.

NFG Thanks this. -
It's true that it will only show you one route at a time but this driver had asked about pre-planning a trip and that can be done using the set origin option. I may be confused but I think they can do what they needed to do.

Normally, I would not get into contraversial discussions, however, a valid poit was made & I have to agree with the general population on this paticular issue:
Map Updates & costs:
Someone here made the comment about "Why sould we have to pay for updated maps when we spent upwards of $500 for a piece of equipment that is designed to help us to do our jobs?"
Yes, Mark, I do see Rand's position as far as their reasonings for wanting to charge for updated maps. However, On the flip side of that coin, fellow "TRUCK DRIVERS" also have a valid point and should be taken into concideration. Yes, you are right about Microsoft charging for an updated Operating System, (Windows XP to Windows 7) and they are justifyably right to do so. We are talking about an entirly new & different Operating system here. While yes, they both have the underlying and back bone of dos to operate, both are entirly different.
However, Even microsoft knows this, that, if & when there is a needed updated version or fix to their current operating system, they offer those updates for free in order to keep their customers up to date with the latest fixes & updated information (Microsoft Streets & Trips).
Now, Rand, would be better served & would stand a far better chance of retaining many of their customers if, they implemented the same updates & support as MS.
Where Rand is wanting to charge for updated maps, this to me isn't a very smart move. Mainly because they are already offering maps as their "Back Bone" to service their customers. To charge for updated construction or Newly added roads, is like for MS charging for updated fixes and or security updates.
Now, if rand is looking to make more money on this same type of plat form, they would do far better by charging for an upgraded model of their existing back bone. Lets take the T500 & T700 models for instance. Each one has its very own individual featurers which are only avail to that model unless one has upgraded to the next level. The same applies here. Rand is looking at again, expanding to make more money, then by comming out with a " T800 or the alike, is defunately the way to go.
How to come out with a far better model than then T700? All one has to do is look at THE demands of various features that are not currently avail with the latest moodel & go from there. Still not sure as to where to go/ By all means, contact me as I have way more ideas into what areas to expand to that most folks here have even thought of, many of which has never even been brought up on here, and I'd definately would not bring up on here mainly as I don't wish for my ideas to be stolen, LOL. -

Hit choose destination.
enter address or select it from address book
do not hit "begin new route" but rather select "set origin" at the bottom center of the screen. This button is located on the same screen as the "begin new route"
The GPS will now act as if you physically located at the address you want to pre plan your trip from.
Now hit choose destination again and enter the address you want or select it from your address book. This time hit "begin new route"
The GPS will now calculate your route for you and you can see all the details of the pre planned trip included miles, turns, time etc...
To return the GPS to your actual location go back to the map screen and you will see a small button on the lower right side "return to gps location" or once you start to move it will go back to your actual location. You can only pre plan a trip while you are sitting.
This is one of my favorite features.

Thank you for the reply, but the information you give is wrong. If you read the info in the red, you will see where I stated that I tried to update the system after the fatal error. No updates fixed the problem, and after spending hours on RM website and finding no answers, this was the only solution I was left with that worked. After un-installing the TND Dock, I did not loose any saved information previously stored on c:\programs... When I re-installed the older version TND Dock, the system worked again, and all I had to do was download the new maps and info/updates to current. The old saved information was put back on the system due to the fact I did not delete the folder containing that information on c:\
Your input was greatly appreciated but was not helpful to the problem with no correct remedy to fix the problem.
Thank You for you help.Last edited: Nov 20, 2010

New maps were not available during this last download this past week. Only files that the TND needs to operate on.
As I posted Friday, the update does resolve a few issues that were causing the T5B's models to give fatal errors. Their was nothing wrong with the software internally, it was a file that controls a reminder message.
Thanks,

As with any other navigation device you do get updates to the Maps for free for x amount of days, but anything after that is usually charged.
The maps you have on your TND will work, but will not be the most current.
Thanks,
Mark
