Diffrent states diffrent classifications to suit their own local laws. I cant speak for other places but in SD at least DWI (driving while intoxicated) and DUI (driving under influence) are esentially the same and on a more local level CAN inform a LOCAL court without saying it if the charge was drug or achohol related.....though thats somewhat uncommon and i think is only really used by the big citys. While OWI (operateing while intoxicated) is a broader charge. I.E a drunk guy on a tractor or a horse vs in a car.

Typically DUI and DWI are most common. But if you really piss off the cop or are doing something weird OWI is a catchall that makes it much harder to wiggle out of a charge on a technicality. I.E trying to argue a SUV is diffrent then a car in common terms or trying to use a city law to sidestep state/federal laws.

When it comes to charges they are esentially the exact same thing. Just what someone decided to put on the paperwork. Again this only applies to SD....but i imagine its common elsewhere.
