I have been OTR O/O since 2010 and have a. clean and safe driving record. Now I’m thinking to switch to fuel tanker so I can work local and be home everyday.
I need advice from tanker drivers what kind of money is in there? I live in Fresno CA. Any good company that you would like to mention? Will help.
Thanks

I don't know of any company that run out of Fresno but I can tell you what to look for. You're lucky because Fresno has a lot of gas haulers right there in town. What I would look for is a company that hauls dedicated runs for a large gasoline company. There are a lot of companies that haul for anybody but look for the name on the trailer for the dedicated ones. The problem you're going to have is the experienced drivers that went to those better companies when the majors sold out. I'd go out and talk with some of the drivers. It's hard to do because you can't really get into where they load so you have to catch them unloading or stopped somewhere else.
Just approach with caution and make sure the driver knows what you're doing. Let the driver know you are looking for a job and would like to know if he or she knows who's hiring. Take all numbers or names down even if they are not hiring. You'll want to apply at all companies even if they are not hiring at that point of time. You never know when they need a driver and if you're ready to go they just might hire you.
You can look at their trucks and get some kind of idea of what kind of company it is. It's not a fool proof method because I have seen companies that have the best looking trucks around and are the worst companies to work for. It's just a tool when you're looking. I've got to tell you that you'd be very lucky to get hire on with a good company. There are plenty of good experienced drivers that are looking for a job. It's just like any other company where you start at the bottom and work up. The big difference is that in gasoline hauling your record speaks tons on what kind of driver you are. The companies are looking for a driver that knows the product as well as driving. So study up on gasoline and diesel and know the laws about unloading. There are a couple of training films on you tube that cover unloading. I would look for the one made by Chevron because they are the most professional.
You can expect the pay to be about $20.00 an hour by so many of the companies use difference ways to pay their drivers. When I drove, about 20 years ago, I was making $23.50 an hour and anything over 10 hours was OT. So a good job would be over $30.00 an hour, I would think.ChicagoJohn, Lav-25, Adrienna Brown and 1 other person Thank this. -
Gashauler summed it up pretty good except for the pay.... I think most companies are bumping the $30 an hour mark now trying to keep up with the other trucking industries
Be positive the driver shortage has hit the tanker industry too so even if they tell you no in the beginning I can guarantee you an hour later they’re hoping you check back inLav-25 Thanks this. -
As an o/o are you looking to lease on to a tanker company or become a company driver? You can pm me if you’re wanting to lease
