Few people understand how deductions actually work . If you deduct $20,000 a year for depreciation that isn't $20,000 off your taxes . It's $20,000 off your taxable income . Roughly speaking , if you are in the 20% bracket a $20,000 deduction lowers your taxes by $4,000 . If you buy a new truck to keep a deduction you could pay close to $4,000 in sales tax and higher insurance and property tax before you even think about payments .
You could put some money into a deductible retirement account like Roadmedic said and use other money to buy tools or overhaul the engine to get deductions .
