Hi, first post. Hopefully, this is the correct sub-forum for it...
I'm currently in trucking school in Memphis TN, and have already obtained my permit. I have a partner in mind already, and we, if at all possible, do not want to drive OTR, as much as it's pushed onto us at our school. We both have family that depend on us, so we figured Local/Regional would be our more favorable type of jobs. Does anyone have any advice or experience about going to Local/Regional(maybe Dedicated as well), right after obtaining a CDL, with no experience? Is it a lost cause? We are willing to travel to any local terminals, but I'm honestly afraid of being turned away immediately because of the lack of experience.

Teaming local? Garbage collection. Companies like team trux cuz they can run long distances without breaking. OTR to get your feet wet for 2 or 3 months then go solo local would be my suggestion.
drewman Thanks this. -
Do you know if Memphis does any dedicated newbie teams as well? -
Why do you want to team if you want to stay local?
Go to all the teamster jobs, and fill out applications. Sometimes they take people green.
Have you considered getting on at FedEx or United Parcel?
Typically you will do about 3 years in those places working inside, but that's how they hire their drivers. Once you make it to driver......GRAVY TRAIN. -
I would definitely like to drive for FedEx, but I read that they require experience; however, I am definitely willing to go along with your advice. Thanks for the suggestion -
Local jobs are all pretty much solo.
AND,
Go banging on doors. Introduce yourself in person.
Hang around a place until they either hire you, or you get arrested for trespassing.
Seek, and ye will find.Fuelinmyveins, Dan.S and drewman Thank this. -
Food service companies run teams and usually home every day. Some of their websites are hard to navigate to find those jobs, but they're there. You must apply for "driver trainee" or "driver helper" or "driver associate" and those jobs are there because new grads that post on here get those jobs.
Sygma Network
US Foods
Reinhart Food Service
Sysco
Performance Food Group
Gordon Food Service
McLane Food Service
Gate Gourmet
McLane and Sygma Network are probably the two easiest to get on with, but try all of them. Do the online apps, then follow up with a phone call.Njhandofdoom and drewman Thank this.
