WTF??? This is what I’m talking about-why would someone give a teenager with a learners permit a high powered vehicle like a BMW? This doesn’t make sense at all!

And whomever gave him the keys to that car, knowing he only had a learners permit. They’re going to be in a world of trouble as well… Don’t know if they’ll be in trouble criminally, but darn sure civilly…

And that’s before the wrongful death lawsuit, because you know it’s coming!
Anyone know New York State’s rules and restrictions on learners permits and as far as passengers go?

You really think it would have been prevented if it was a different type of car? Looking at the video I would say even if it was a 70 something amc wagon with an in-line six running on 4 cylinders the kill d would have still managed to get more than enough speed together to kill his passenger.
Actually my experiance is that it’s not the car, it’s the driver and the parents lack of understanding thier kid is a #######! I also blame the lack of working with kids from a young age in a repetitive nature.

Probably would’ve made a difference if the parents used some COMMON SENSE!
My first car when I started driving on a learner’s permit was a Subaru GL wagon that literally couldn’t get out of its own way-even with a manual transmission. Even then my parents instilled into my head that a car is a machine that can kill if it isn’t RESPECTED and driven properly.

A highschool friend wrote off his little 4 banger ####box Chevy when he lost it on a curve doing 2x the speed limit (and almost 3x the recommended speed on the curve). Rolled it UP the bank he hit the ditch so hard.

Nothing to do with the car, all to do with the driver.

Trust me that Subaru was much mor capeable than the car I described. I used that description purposely as an acquaintance lost a child in one many years ago. Cause of accident? Speeding and lost controll!
Speaking with some of his friends at the funeral it was brought to light that he would get it rolling and never slow down for anything because it took too long to get up to speed!

Think about kids way back. The didn’t sit and play with thier phone when traveling with thier parents, they got to watch what was going on and observe how the parent drove, how they reacted. If the parent was smart they explained what was happening or why what that other car did was incorrect and what could have append. Police would come to schools a couple times a year and show movies to the entire student body about the dangers of speeding, not paying attention, they had movies about proper driving, they saw the wreckage and even the friking dead bodies in some of those films! It got most of them thinking long before they took to the streets!

Today, They play on thier phone, talk crap without learning a thing get a crash course on driving and responsibility given a set of keys and off they go! Doesn’t matter that they showed no skill, no patients, talk back, don’t listen, don’t get punished when they do wrong, get participation trophies no matter how bad they performed and You think the type of car matters? They would have found a way to kill someone if you took the motor out before giving it to them!

You just triggered my memory. One kid from two valleys over killed his passenger in a Chevy chevett passing in the other lane around a blind turn, police estimated he was doing over 70 in a 35 zone. I can’t even begin to count the rolled over pinto’s, Vegas and the like that I have seen. I don’t want to even think about the carnage I have seen of some of the cars from the 60’s and I’m not even talking about the muscle cars. I once saw a slant 6 sitting right on top of a kid in the back seat! I have witnessed 6 dead in a minivan powered by a whimsy 4 banger ( I am crying right now as I can still see and hear the teen drivers little sister asking for help while she was pinned in the wreckage but the most anyone could do was hold her hand). Took years before she was able to walk again!

I think too often people want to look for a convenient excuse like blaming it on the type of car. The issue runs much deeper than that and it needs a much broader approach.
