It depends on the local work laws, but you should be able to work the dock. Maybe not drive a lift, but fingerprinting freight shouldn't be a problem. Try looking up some LTL carriers in your area and see if they are hiring dock workers. Like Yellow, Southeastern, Overnight, Con-Way, etc.

LTL= Less than Truckload.

 

That's how I started. My classmate's father owned a small trucking company. On Saturdays, I washed trailers and helped with trailer lube, brake adjustment, turn signal repair, etc. I swept the floor in the engine shop where my classmate worked. My favorite part of the job was bringing another trailer into the wash bay or shop with their 1947 International. In the afternoon, I would fuel the rigs and place add-oil and coolant on board.

During summer vacations, I painted the building and more than a few dump boxes. If you get a job in a truck shop, be sure to wear ear plugs when appropriate.

I regret not taking more photos on the job. Direct Transit Lines of Grand Rapids standardized on Internationals, but their owner-operators had a variety of trucks including two diesels in the 1950s. Direct's switcher was a 1947 single axle gas job. I liked it best with the straight pipe, but they installed a new muffler and had the bench seat re-covered. I painted the black fenders with a brush.

 

If you like old trucks that much, get a monthly copy of "Wheels of Time" the magazine from the American Historical truck Society. I don;t know who carries them in Oregon, but here in the midwest you can get them at any Tractor Supply Company store. I pick it up each month, and also get "Old trucks" which is a similar magazine.
