Don't believe the hype when it comes to Vista. XP is just over 7 years old at this point and Vista just had its one year birthday. The first year of any OS is hard (XP included) but I'd say that for the average user that has a bit of computer knowledge Vista is ready for mass adoption. I threw my library of games and programs at Vista and only two games would not run but here's the thing, it wasnt because of Vista! The reason the two games would not run is my laptop uses software emulation of sound and the games were fairly old and had issues with the emulation. To prove the point I dual booted my dv9500t laptop and put XP Pro on it as well and guess what! The games crashed under XP as well, so Vista had nothing to do with it.

The more I use Vista the better I like it. When Vista launched it defiantly had some issues but for the most part the problem currently is users trying to install Vista on ancient pc's with hardware that is not supported. Vista does have higher system requirements but what most people don't understand is the higher requirements are for the higher functions of the GUI like the Aero interface, transparent menus and the like. Are these functions required to use vista...well no but the more I use it the better I like them. I'd say I use Vista 90% of the time on my laptop now and I'm probably the biggest computer geek you've ever seen.

Sure XP will run a bit better but its a 7+ year old OS compared to a 1 year old OS. Its fud guys, pure fud. I'd be willing to bet the average user would not notice the difference in speed if both OS were set up by somebody like me. In fact I'd bet they would prefer Vista if they would just get the fud out of their head. Many of these 'tests' are not comparing apples to apples, they skew it because they don't want to upgrade hardware/software or learn something new. More and more developers are writing support for Vista and its adoption into the mainstream market has greatly increased since its launch.

If you have questions about stuff like this feel free to ask, I'd be more than happy to clear up the fud.

I am still on the fence with Vista. I bought two new PC's about 6 months ago with Vista pre-installed. They came with 512mb of ram from the factory and shared that with the video card. :biggrin_25513:
I upgraded to a gig and still was unhappy with it. So, I wiped out Vista and installed XP on my machine. My wife still has Vista on hers and doesn't complain at all about it.
Now, I just bought a new laptop about 2 weeks ago. It is an HP with AMD Turion 64 and Vista Pro. Came pre installed with 1 gig and my old PIII Laptop with 768 mb of ram blew it away. I knew that memory was a problem so I have already maxed it out at 4GB. It is DEFINATELY what it needed to make things run smoothly. I do have an occasional glitch here and there, but I might keep Vista around for a little before I give up on it and install XP Pro on this one. Something I read is that if I install XP, my video card will only go 128mb, keeping Vista will allow it to run at 864mb or something like that.

Hey Gazoo did you get the 64 bit version of Vista Premium? The reason I ask is only the 64 bit version can use the full 4gb of ram. As far as your previous experience I'd say a lot of the problem was the fact that you really need 2gb ram with Vista for it to run properly. What HP model did ya get Gazoo? I know I'm very happy with my new baby, its schweeeet! Sounds like you have the 8400 GS video card, ya get a dv6500z?

Oh and Cybergal gets 2 demerits for posting a Yahoo story :biggrin_255: muhahah sorry Cybergal but the only thing I get from yahoo is spam mail :biggrin_25510:

Okay here is what I got:

    HP 6715b
    AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-52 (1.6-GHz, 2 x 512-KB L2 cache)
Windows Vista Business, 64 bit selected at initial boot.
    4gb of Kingston Ram
    ATI Radeon X1250 Video Card

It may not be much, but it is more than enough for what I need it for. [IMG]

I just bought a system with AMD Athalon 64 Dual core, 1gb ram, SATA HD and DVD ROM, with 512mb ram dedicated to the video card. It had Vista on it. It took two hours to boot the system all the way through, and actually get to the desk top, the first time through. :biggrin_25510:

Tried to load my peripherals, everything worked but my scanner. Software loaded w/o issue. But the scanner was a huge issue for me. I run a business grade scanner, with the large flat bed, and I sure the heck am not going to go buy another $400 scanner, just to run vista. Vista was extremely slow on this system. Boot time was worse than my old AMD 700mh! And it would hang at times when rebooting for updates. :biggrin_2554: And that was also an issue for me.

Deleted the partition with vista op system on it, left the recovery partition alone and loaded XP. This system runs 6x's faster now! :yes2557:

For me, Vista was too big of a resource hog and would deplete my productivity. 5 minutes to boot a system is way too long for a dual core system. I can't see people getting much done in the vista environment. JMO

See the problem here? RAM, RAM, RAM.....if you would have upgraded to more ram, your system would have booted just as fast if not faster.

I know I had problems with Vista at first, but it really was not Vista's fault, it was HP's due to the bloatware they install at the factory. After I did my initial recovery DVD's I formatted the entire hard drive and reinstalled Vista Home Premium and my boot times went from 3+ minutes to less than 45 seconds (note I had to get what's called a Vista Anywhere DVD, I did not reinstall from the factory recovery DVD's I created). Sounds like bullhaulerswife may have had similar bloatware installed and it was hosing the system, plus the ram issue and you get slow computer/boot times. These idiot companies like HP take money from these (censored (hehe)) companies to offset the overall price of the laptop to compete in the market, but it irks customers when it takes 3 minutes to boot the laptop (because of the bloat more times than not).

Also I think Gazoo has it spot on, again you really need 2gb ram for Vista to run properly. How old is your scanner bullhaulerswife? Did you check for Vista drivers for your scanner on the mfg company's website?

How's Vista business working out for ya Gazoo? I have Vista Home Premium and its pretty good. With the business version you don't get the Windows Media Center do you?

Ok, so tell my why they are selling systems with insufficient ram to run Vista then? LOL HP has their head buried.

Yeah, I had bloatware, for sure. My scanner is a 2002. And it cost me $400, and HP isn't supporting the Vista drivers. HP wants to make money off new peripherals.
