So I scheduled my DOT Physical for this Wednesday morning. It's the last thing I need to do before returning to the DMV to get my Permit ( passed the tests already ). I am a little concerned as they use a weight to height chart that seems to not take into every single person build structure etc. I am 5'5" and 240 lbs. I have always been really stocky/ some what chubby all my life. According to this chart my BMI would put me at 41. There is no way in hell my BMI is 41. I may have some chubby going on here, but man the job I do now is extremely labor intensive. I lift/carry/ bend and pick up mats, uniforms and all kinds of heavy crap all day, not to mention probably walk 5 or more miles a day easily. I think there is quite a bit of muscle mass hidden under the chubby lol. One thing I know I need to do is lay off the low car monster I drink all the #### time, it's artifically raising my blood pressure. I went and checked it the other day at CVS and it was something like 135/ 82. But that was after pounding 2 monsters in the 2 hours before that lol.

Anyway, is this going to be a problem? But after reading on the DOT physicals stuff, they seem to be sticky on this BMI/Neck Size sleep apnea stuff. Ok I will admit, ya I am chubby some what fat, but I consider myself able to do just about anything with no limitations. The sleep apnea thing scares me because they seem to base that off your bmi and neck size, the thing is I have ALWAYS slept great, I sleep almost exactly 8 hours every single night with no problems. It's almost weird how my body wakes up at almost exactly 8 hours no matter what. I don't generally ever sleep in sort to speak on days off etc.

Should I be worried about any of this? Or do I have bigger things to worry about, such as when I start to actually back up a truck and trailer lol ...

On a side note, I have seen some guys out there that literally roll into the cab and into the back of a trailer ... so maybe I am over analyzing this.

I'm not really the expert voice bc I'm a student myself, but I was all worked up about the physical I took this morning for no reason. I thought it was going to be rigorous but turned out to be nothing at all. I'm 6 ft 260 and the doc just told me to watch my weight. I think that u are probably just over thinking like the rest of us realistic rookies are doing. Just breathe and u will be fine! Good luck!

My "other" life was in sleep disorders.
Risks are having a 17" or more neck size, a receding jaw-line, being over-weight (but this is NOT always the case), high BP, excessive snoring, waking up "gasping" for air, waking up to use the bathroom frequently, daytime sleepiness, etc. Some people were so "used" to being sleep deprived they denied having this dis-order. However, it HAS been shown that MD's will send practically everyone to get a sleep test, as it is a HUGE money maker. I believe the write-up was on the AMA web-site.
My recommendation is to get a tape recorder to record yourself for an hour, or however long it will record. If you snore and there are gasping noises in between, yes, maybe you do have apnea.
IF gone untreated, it can lead to many health issues. If TREATED, you must be compliant (and now they are using wireless modems to transmit YOUR compliance to the MD, employer, insurance, etc... NON compliance is a big no-no)

Thanks for the info. My neck size when I measured it in a unconventional way was right at 17. I used a string loosely around my neck than checked it with a tape measure. Sleeping wise, my wife has never mentioned me snoring and I think if I did she'd let me know lol. Like I said I sleep a solid 8 hours every night without ever waking up ... unless a thunderstorm rolls through or some young punk drives by at midnight with his boom boom's turned up and we have the windows open. I don't believe I have sleep apnea at all ... what I am worried about is the doc taking my bmi and neck size and saying I should be tested for something I am pretty positive about. You mentioned the money thing involved in it, that's what has me worried about it. A money grabbing scheme for them basically. I guess we will see on wednesday morning. I will update with the results.

There is an inexpensive test called a "SNAPP" test IF it does come down to that, and you have to pay OOP. It's $99, and it IS accepted by the insurance companies now. A few months ago they did not.
If your wife isn't complaining, then I wouldn't worry. She would be the first to let you know...LOL
I'm sure it's all policy and procedure...

I don't recall DOT physicals requiring any BMI. All they do is check blood pressure, check your hearing, see if you tell different colors, eye chart.

yeah..i never been ask about bmi in any of my d.o.t. physicals. just bp, eye test, sugar test(urine),check for hernia, hearing test and doc checks eyes, ears, and throat. just lay off of any caffein for a few days before test.that,ll help lower your bp( the numbers you have for your bp is passing. can be no higher than 139/90)

There have always been. Instructions on the long form for the doctor to check for signs of respiratory problems and check for signs of sleep apnea. If all was right in the industry a driver could simply say he got plenty of sleep and never had any problems with fatigue. There is no FMCSA polucy regarding BMI .
The problem is doctors used by many carriers will recommend a sleep study because of a high BMI . Even if you pass a physical for a permit most carriers will require you to take another one .
Even if the test shows you don't have sleep apnea you've wasted a lot of time and money .

I am 5'8" and I weighed in at 204. The chart called that OBESE. Now I don't know about you but I believe Obese to refer to fat people. I am just linebackerlike.

My problem was blood sugar. I was over 1000. They pulled me for a month. I had to go to my doctor who took my A1C. 15plus. After a month, I am down to 190. Sugar is below 100. A1C is 8.2 and dropping fast.

No matter how the Medical exam comes out, live healthy, live longer.
