I personally would set the pole with the pilot driver sitting in the escort vehicle. Some 300 lb dude driving a 1992 longbed Chevy can drop the height 6 inches.

 

About 8 years ago, I hit a bridge, so I know how that driver is feeling right about now. I didnt destroy anything though, there was eye hooks on the top of the unit and it just scraped and bent them down. My pilot claimed he didnt hit it.....3 hours prior we did measure and he was 6 inches higher than the unit I was carrying.

However 2 weeks prior to that, same kind of unit, I hit a fiber optic line(wasn't power) tore down a pole, and made a big mess. Thankfully the sheriff and highway patrol came out, a company had been doing work on the line/pole/ground and let the line sag. This escort says he didnt hit it either...... I cant remember how long he had been escorting but it hadn't been long at all. And if im not mistaken, he was usually a chase car.

I was on route both times....... wasn't ticketed or anything. But, I know the feeling.

 

I've had to fire 3 high poles over the years.

Finally convinced him to let me do it my way. 9 inches low.
