Hi, I'm a new driver, just over 2 years driving and I'm thinking of leaving the industry. Two years in with an immaculate record, pulling vans for a mega, running Toronto to Thunder Bay on hwy 17 for the past 18 months.
I think it's just too much ######## for me, and I like to think that I have a high tolerance for ########. Between the dispatch, planners , ####ty equipment and in my opinion insufficient pay it doesn't seem worth it.
Based out of the g.t.a., does anyone have any suggestions or reccomendations of where I could look for a better driving job before I decide to pack it in and get out of trucking?.
I think I would be happier at a smaller company where things are run smoother but I'm not sure where to look.
Thanks for taking the time to read!

Good luck I started in 2008 and have a spotless driving record and over a million miles of safety driving and it’s tough finding anything around the Gta that pays a decent wage and where you can still have a life . With the current market right now employers can cherry pick who they want as there’s more drivers then jobs and i’ve read online on a immigration lawyers facebook page recently that the government has open up immigrants looking for PR residency for trucking and the transit industries . it’s only going to get worse

All my career has been driving 18 wheelers pulling dryvans , reefers and some containers and now i’m actually looking at class D jobs like on-site fuel , roll off etc . the problem even with my 18 years of experience i’m not getting any calls back and i think it’s because i don’t have experience in those fields and no wants to train you . All i can say is look at websites like indeed every week for better opportunities or like you’re already thinking be smart and leave this sh$t show of an industry all together. With all these companies signing up for self driving trucks the future of this industry will only get worse

I live in Buffalo NY but used to go to Cascades in Ontario all the time. Here's a roll off job. Roll-Off Driver
I'd also look at GFL they seem to have open positions as well.

I’m in Montreal and have been looking for a year and a half to two years as a new driver. Just found something this week back east in Moncton, will be in the pale green trucks with the white stripe on them. I had zero luck in Montreal, wouldn’t even get replies saying “no”.
Wish you the best of luck in your search

You only have two years in. If you’re ready to pack it in then you should. It’s not going to get better in the near future. If you’re young( under 30) go get a trade. Keep your cdl active, but get into the trades. Crane ticket, hvac, heavy vehicle mechanic.

The problem is all those roll off jobs want atleast 1 year roll off experience. I’ve tried applying to upak and Gfl with over 17 years semi truck experience and don’t get anything back from any company

I agree even if you’re 40-45 you still have 20 plus years of your working life so may as well go into trades . If your lifestyle allows a lower pay check . Ie no kids, big mortgage, credit debt or car loan where you can afford to make less while you get you training and license

Thx for the info. I've actually been looking at doing DZ as well. More home time so that I'd be able to get a 2nd job.
I thought that if I stuck it out for 2 years thete would be more opportunities but it doesn't look very good. And you with 17 years clean driving, you'd think companies would be lining up to hire you. What a crazy industry.

Thx, always looking into GFL. I'll have to talk to some of their drivers and see what they say.

Carpenter Scotty and sabresfan 76 Thank this.
